Patchouli Essential Oil Profile

Patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin) is unmistakable, and for those of a certain generation its sweet earthy aroma will often trigger happy memories of the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Adopted by the counterculture that began in the USA and quickly swept the western world, patchouli will be forever associated with hippies, psychedelia, Hare Krishna and marijuana; although not necessarily all of those or in that order!

Absolutes; What They Are & How They Are Made

The delicate nature of many flowers means that steam distillation can not be used to extract the fragrant oil because the intense heat destroys the flowers, causing them to become compacted into a solid mass that steam is unable to penetrate. If the steam is unable to move freely through the flowers during distillation it is impossible to extract the oil.
